A couple years back, Allan Hough went to Berlin and came back to San Francisco a changed man. He had a snappier wrist. A lager-filled belly. And he was inspired. Why don’t we play ping pong the way they do in Berlin? he pondered. It sounded silly — but this is a man who takes ping pong seriously.

On a recent afternoon, Hough is leaning against a pool table, arms crossed, staring into the corner of his cluttered, Christmas light-laden garage in San Francisco’s Mission district. In a chaos of surfboards and bike wheels and beer cozies and wooden chairs, two emerald slabs — the gigantic halves of a brand new ping pong table — are neatly propped up against the far wall. “I think we’ll use the new one tonight,” he says matter-of-factly.

I share your love for old photos…like time travelling. I watch old movies the same way (most recent: “Naked City” - 1948).

Three things about the show so far: 1) Osbourne is right - “it’s like a fucking Star Wars bar in here!”. Part of the appeal. 2) Celeb Apprentice is really all about the fine art of throwing opponents under the bus. Blago played you! He threw you under at the jump (which is why Donald tried to give you an out); you should have rejected the gambit, Sinbad. The game was over in the 1st 5 mins. of the episode. 3) “Peace sign, pimp walk, fist bump.” Now, THAT was an exit. :) And one which I fervently hope NOT to see the former Governor emulate, when his ass is (everybody in unison) THROWN UNDER THE BUS!

Tracy, I had to take this to tumblr; 140 ain’t gonna cut it. :)

(1) Clipping fingernails? Please. Last November. I saw a woman on the northbound #6 take off her shoes and socks (~57th and the Museum) AND BEGIN TO PICK HER FEET! Driver said nothing. I’ve seen feet-picking two other times, all three on the #6.

Outrageously unsanitary. The mindset of a person who would do that on. a. bus. —- can’t go there…

(2) Projectile Sneezing: Just overt, no attempt to cover up whatsoever-type sneezing. Cuts across all lines: young, old, black, white, hispanic, asian, male, female…this is the kind of gross inconsideration that makes me want to bitchslap in response. Instead, having a ChicagoCard Plus in monthly pass mode, I simply get off at the next stop. …’course, you can’t do that if it’s a #6 in express on Lake Shore Drive…

(3) Nail Salon On Wheels: big among the teen set. Open bottles of fingernail polish and God knows what else, filling the bus with noxious vapors.

(4) Gourmet Dining: you know, a piece of fruit or cookies, etc., is no big deal. But entire MEALS in white styrofoam containers being devoured for 15+ minutes?? Guess the drivers aren’t being paid enough to intervene. <chuckle> <guffaw>

…and last, but not least

(5) Public Urination: no, not on the bus, but at a bus stop. Woman last summer, 51st and Lake Park (late evening - sun still out), walks to a corner of the kiosk, pulls down her pants —- and urinates.

“I had to go!”

At this point, so do I. What a wonderful crowd! I’ll be on the #6 five days a week! Drive (or be driven) safely! G’night everybody!

A Valentines Day Tale

Several years back, I went all-out on V Day for a new girlfriend of one month. Decided to cook; resurrected a classic, decidedly old-school French recipe for coq au vin. Tackled it like a chemistry project. Laborious. Even made my own bouquet garni.

Went out for wine, and when I re-entered the apartment, the smell was so fabulous, it turned ME on!
Neighborhood dogs were protesting with signs in the street below:

“None for us?? I thought we were friends!”

“No more head rubs for you, buddy!”

“No chicken, no newspapers!”

Set a table with borrowed fine linen and exquisite silverware. I had her at the door. :)
In the middle of dinner:

“You did this all for me?”

“No, dah-ing; I did it for your _vagina_!”

A wide-eyed pause, followed by 15 seconds of uproarious laughter. She finished off the coq au vin, a second $25 bottle of wine, chocolate mousse, half my refrigerator, and later that night, me.

Moral of the Story: sometimes vagina jokes work.

P90x Plyometrics 1st Time

Just finished Plyo; I placed it on Sun. because I do interval training on Tues. and Thurs. (22 min. jog, 7 x 15 sec. intervals, recovering on the run), along with Ab Ripper X.

Plyometrics is no joke (even Horton drops the “S”-bomb halfway thru). The upper 1/3 of my t-shirt is as wet as if I had been running for 30 min. in 70 deg. weather.

Well thought-out routine, but perhaps too many movement repetitions if you’re doing running or biking, etc.. I’m probably going to eliminate the repeats, and get it down to 35 mins. Or not. :)
I’ll see how it plays out over the next two weeks.
